Strata

The Strata Series is a body of work completed in 2026 that explores the material qualities of native British hardwoods, including oak, ash and cherry.

In geology, strata are distinct layers of rock or sediment formed over time. Similarly, the annual growth rings of a tree record the passage of time, bearing witness to its changing relationship with the surrounding environment. Each ring effectively becomes an archive of growth, climate and experience.

Each works begins with an act of deconstruction. The wood is split, scorched or carved, revealing its internal structure and inherent character. The resulting fragments are then carefully reassembled to emphasise the wood’s contrasting textures, colours and structural qualities. In selected pieces colour swatches inspired by the seasonal character of each tree are introduced extending the dialogue between the material itself and the cycles of the natural world.
